A few activities I have done outside of my studies.

Japanese Culturual Association

Member

I was a member of the Japanese Culture Association. We learn a lot about Japanese culture and also participate in Japanese activities. In JCA, we dedicate some meetings to calligraphy, fan painting, karaoke, helping each other with Japanese homework— that is to list a few. We also do other events and celebrations like Setsubun, partake in international festivals on campus, or volunteer at local Japanese festivals and events.

Koto

--

Koto is a course I took abroad. I don’t recall when I first heard about the koto, but I do know I’ve always wanted to play the instrument. It was such a pleasure to  experience, and it was a great joy to be able to play this instrument! I played Sakura and Sandan no Shirabe for my final performance. To this day, I still keep the music score and the picks as a small memento of that course.

Togitsu Kita Elementary
--

For one of my courses, we were required to volunteer at one of about eight events. I volunteered at Togitsu Kita Elementary where we played games with 6th year Japanese students. One game we played was conducted in English and Japanese with both of us speaking in the other’s native tongue. It was a board game where whatever we landed on, we were expected to read and answer the question in the other’s language. Some other activities we did were karuta, kendama, and Daruma Otoshi.
